Authentic Doulton Lameth studio art nouveau stoneware vase. Tall and elegant Royal Doulton Lambeth studio vase, coloured blue and green with applied stylised art nouveau beaded decoration, circa 1906 height 40cm. Marion Holbrook was active at the Doulton Lambeth factory from the late 1880s through the early 1920s. “X” prefix was used specifically by the Lambeth studio to designate decorative, hand-finished ornamental stoneware patterns and series numbers around the 6400s were designed by the factory artists between 1905 and 1907. Handcrafted in Dorset, England, this unique stoneware piece features a rounded form with decorative pierced lugs, an earthy speckled clay body, and a rich brown glazed upper section. The base is impressed “DORSET ENGLAND” and includes the artist’s maker’s mark and characteristic incised X. Measures approximately 5 inches high × 5 inches wide (12.7 × 12.7 × 12.7 cm). His work explored the relationship between geometric decoration and simple thrown forms, often combining textured surfaces with striking glaze effects. This piece is an excellent example of his distinctive studio pottery and bears the impressed CJ maker’s mark. According to the original information slip found inside one of the vases from this collection, he produced individual oxidised stoneware pieces and explored the relationship between two-dimensional design and three-dimensional form through engraving, slip decoration and resist techniques. This vase is impressed with the CJ maker’s mark and is a fine example of his distinctive contemporary studio pottery. Since Jenkins’ passing in 2022, his work has become increasingly sought after by collectors of British studio ceramics. Etched signature on base – MD. The first 11 photos and photos 16/17 are a good colour match (12/13/14 and 15 look too dark and too green). Please see all photos for a visual description.
