Antique Studio Art Pottery Vase Description and Item Information Up for sale is this antique studio art pottery vase. Please excuse any glare in the photos. The exterior of this pot has a matte light blue glaze with darker blue speckles. The interior has a glossy, brown glaze. There are carved, broad leaves around the exterior. This pot is about 3 1/8 inches tall, and it has a maximum width of approximately 7 1/2 inches. It has nice weight for its size, weighing 2 pounds 4.2 ounces. It would be a great addition to a collection of antique decorative arts. Identification This pot is marked beneath, as shown, FAB 94 165. The overall demeanor (shape, glaze, weight) of this pot is similar to pieces made at the Handicraft Guild of Minneapolis. It could be a student piece. The glazes are similar to those developed by Judson T. Webb, the pottery instructor at Chicago Art Institute, who was involved in the set-up of the Guild. The exact maker is not known though. The exact age is not known, but it is believed to be antique. Condition The pot looks good overall, with no cracks. To the glazed edges of the base, there are a few tiny flakes, the largest of which measures about 1/16 inch by 3/16 inch. I have not cleaned the pot, and there are some small wall paint smudges and minor, scattered, dark scuff marks. It has light wear overall, with some fine, minor crazing, areas of which are slightly darkened. The interior has many fine scratches. As made, there are dimples and other minor flaws. Vintage Katherine Choy Art Pottery Vase Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage Katherine Choy art pottery vase. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This hand thrown pot has abstract, glazed decoration in light and dark brown. It has a white porcelain clay body. It stands about 3 1/2 inches tall, and it has a maximum width of about 5 inches. Unpacked, this piece weighs 1 pound 1.9 ounces. This would be a fine and rare example to add to a collection of American studio ceramics. She is listed in the Vasefinder Museum. Per Vasefinder, Choy was originally from Hong Kong. She was a student of Tony Prieto at Mills College in Oakland, California, where she received B. Choy completed post-graduate studies at Cranbrook Academy in Michigan, where she was a student of Maija Grotell. She became head of the ceramics department at Tulane University’s Newcomb College. Choy co-founded the Clay Art Center of Port Chester, New York with Henry Okamoto. She exhibited at 6000 Years Art in Clay at the Los Angeles County Fair in 1952, and also at the Nationals from 1949 to 1956. Per the Smithsonian Design Museum, Choy passed away from pneumonia at the age of 29. Condition This pot looks great overall, with no chips or cracks. It has very light wear. A small bit of extra clay to the side is as made (see Photo 2). Variations in glazing are as made. Terms of Sale 1. Double stamped old JO and studio Stamp LARGE – Measures: 5 inches wide x 10 1/2 inch High. The base of the vase has some missing clay – done during the firing. This is not seen while on the shelf (see picture). Jeff Oestreich attended Bemidji State University in MN from 1965 to 1969 where he earned a B. He also studied with Warren MacKenzie at the U of M in Minneapolis, before going to England to apprentice at the Bernard Leach Pottery in St. Jeff is a superb craftsman. He has the patience for clean up and detail not often displayed by studio potters. Constantly evolving and developing his forms and glazes, Jeff always brings new work to the table. His most recent work reveals his interest in geometric patterns using precision glaze swaths surfacing his pots. This is just one piece of my large collection. I will be listing multiple pieces of Jeff’s and Warren’s work. I will also be listing work from other students and his contemporaries.
