An exceptional, substantial example of 1970s Brutalist studio pottery. Standing at 33cm tall and weighing a solid 3kg, this is a heavy, high-quality “statement” piece. It perfectly embodies the raw, organic aesthetic of the Mid-Century Modern movement, featuring a rugged “volcanic” exterior that offers incredible tactile and visual depth. Design: Aesthetic? The Exterior: Heavily hand-molded with deep grooves and a multi-tonal, earthy glaze. The “molten lava” texture is highly characteristic of the 1970s Brutalist style. The Interior: A striking contrast is provided by a smooth, vibrant green glossy glaze, a signature “surprise” detail often found in premium studio work from this era. This large-scale sculptural pitcher features a thick, hand-built handle and a sturdy, unglazed base, making it ideal as a standalone floor vase or a centerpiece. Specifications? Height: 33 cm? Weight: 3 kg (Solid, heavy-set stoneware) possibly west german manufacture. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Very miniscule chipping on random edges but tjus has to be scrutinised to be noticeable (please see photographs) no cracks. The base shows authentic hand-finished character.

Japanese Contemporary Studio Pottery Vase – “Sen no Tsubo” (Vessel of Lines) by Sato Miki. A powerful and museum-quality work of Japanese contemporary studio ceramics. By Sato Miki , a recognized ceramic artist from Aizu, Fukushima Prefecture, born June 13, 1945. Weight: Body 2.6kg / Total with box approx. Dimensions: H 23.5cm × W 19cm / Mouth diameter 11cm. (? – “Vessel of Lines”). Original signed wooden box. Provenance documents included: Original artist biography sheet and 1983. (New Art Newspaper) article featuring the work. The Work: This large egg-shaped vessel is an exceptional example of Sato Miki’s signature. The entire surface is wrapped in rhythmic horizontal bands of two alternating textures – smooth compressed clay and deeply incised dotted scoring – creating a hypnotic, almost textile-like quality reminiscent of ancient woven cloth or geological strata. The palette moves from warm sandy beige to deep slate blue-grey, with a luminous blue-green glaze pooling richly at the irregular, deliberately unfinished rim – a bold contrast that highlights the artist’s mastery of controlled spontaneity. The interior is glazed in deep black with flashes of cerulean blue. This beautiful baluster shape miniture vase is a tour de force of the fantastic work by Mary Rich who is sadly no longer with us. Covered with a delicate gold geometric pattern with pastel hoop design background it finishes with a narrow plain porcelain finish at the foot but a wide delicate 4cmts fluted top over a narrow raised neck. THERE IS DAMAGE see pictures, to the rim but sensitive restoration should be possible. It will arrive well wrapped in foam and double boxed.
