This high-quality studio piece features a distinct potter’s hanko (chop mark) near the base, denoting expert craftsmanship and artisanal origins. Finished in a sophisticated mottled ash and iron-oxide glaze, the tray possesses a beautiful organic patina and a heavy, “well-poured” feel typical of fine mid-century style stoneware. Versatile Display Uses: Suiseki: Perfect for displaying viewing stones in sand or to create a miniature landscape. Ikebana: An ideal basin for Moribana style flower arrangements using a kenzan (frog). Stewart Johnston (Dess Station Pottery), “Still Life” a large studio pottery tray with trompe l’oeil. And cork screw marked verso and dated 1976 with three large bottles (marked verso), a candle holder and a bell (station mark verso). This is a very rare and unique piece of art. Each piece is stamped with the Dess Station pottery’steam train’ and most are signed by Stewart. The bottles have removable pottery stoppers and the bell has a pottery clapper with a sweet sounding ring. All pieces are in great condition with the exception of one corner of the tray which has a piece chipped off. This cannot be seen from above or the front, as shown in the photographs. Tray is very heavy and measures. 57cm wide X 43cm deep. Bottles H27cm X 2 & H24cm. Bell H17cm candle holder H9cm. Any questions or if your require additional photographs, please message me.
