Bold and highly sculptural vintage studio pottery vase featuring an architectural, Brutalist-inspired form. This statement ceramic piece is constructed with multiple tubular vessels joined together and accented with raised geometric and circular appliqué details, giving it a strong tactile and industrial-modern presence. Finished in a deep charcoal/black glaze with intentional raw clay exposure, the contrast highlights the hand-built nature and texture of the work. Vintage Ceramica Varadera Cuba Hand Sculpture Studio Pottery Vase Signed Manuel. Rare and interesting studio pottery vase hand decorated with freehand artist Cuban illustration. The renowned artist “Manuel” Manuel in his creative role as a painter and ceramist, while maintaining his weekly collaboration as a cartoonist in the provincial newspaper Girón, from his native Matanzas. Among the many awards obtained by Manuel, considered one of the hundred best cartoonists in the world in the 20th century, is precisely the Grand Prize of the third edition of the International Biennial of Humor of San Antonio de los Baños, with a series of cartoons captured on ceramic plates using the majolica technique. An exceptional, substantial example of 1970s Brutalist studio pottery. Standing at 33cm tall and weighing a solid 3kg, this is a heavy, high-quality “statement” piece. It perfectly embodies the raw, organic aesthetic of the Mid-Century Modern movement, featuring a rugged “volcanic” exterior that offers incredible tactile and visual depth. Design: Aesthetic? The Exterior: Heavily hand-molded with deep grooves and a multi-tonal, earthy glaze. The “molten lava” texture is highly characteristic of the 1970s Brutalist style. The Interior: A striking contrast is provided by a smooth, vibrant green glossy glaze, a signature “surprise” detail often found in premium studio work from this era. This large-scale sculptural pitcher features a thick, hand-built handle and a sturdy, unglazed base, making it ideal as a standalone floor vase or a centerpiece. Specifications? Height: 33 cm? Weight: 3 kg (Solid, heavy-set stoneware) possibly west german manufacture. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Very miniscule chipping on random edges but tjus has to be scrutinised to be noticeable (please see photographs) no cracks. The base shows authentic hand-finished character.
