This is an incredibly pleasing John Ward studio pottery high sided bowl. It is beautifully thrown having a very tactile surface in duck egg blue with an abstract brown design to each side. It is fully marked to the base and measures 14cm in diameter and 14.5cm tall. It is in good condition.

A stoneware vessel in an oval form with dipped rim with glazed by British studio ceramist John Ward (1938-) circa 1997. The form of this vessel is minimalistic and intentionally ambiguous between being a pot and a vase. Being organic and earthy with harmonious proportion is the artist’s iconic aesthetic. The vessel has a slight textured surface and is covered in a lava-black matt glaze with a soft bronze wash. The shimmering effect is very subtle and can escape the eyes of a casual observer. An unusual and rather mysterious piece from the artist’s repertoire. The base is branded with the artist’s seal and initial “JW”. From a UK collection. John Ward’s ceramic artwork is found in the permanent collections of many leading art museums including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Biography (courtesy of Oxford Ceramic Gallery): The leading hand-builder John Ward was born in 1938 and trained at Camberwell College of Arts in the 1960s. He is one of a number of significant modern potters to have concentrated on the pared down individual vessel form, most particularly the bowl, as a touchstone for exploration. His generally simple work has been augmented by more complex structures, the shapes cut and altered, perhaps with abstract, geometric decoration and cut-away rims that give some of his pieces an architectural quality. In addition to urban surfaces, his work evokes honed natural forms, the kind of bonier, elemental landscape he has lived in since he moved close to the Welsh coast in 1979. His best pots speak eloquently of the limitless language of the bowl and globular jar, their sculptural and metaphorical resonances. Height: 8.3 in (21.09 cm). Width: 8 in (20.32 cm). Magnificent Large John Ward Studio Pottery Bowl. Wonderful piece by an internationally acclaimed artist. Stunning glaze and form. There was a tiny hairline crack which has been fully restored to museum standard by the renowned restorer Fiona Hutchinson. The bowl now looks spectacular and rings perfectly. This listing is for a really nice quality studio pottery piece by British potter Audrey Richardson. At first glance the piece has some comparisons with the work of John Ward or Hans Coper, especially the shape, coloring, and surface (Richardson’s monogram with a scallop surround on the bottom of the pot looks much like Ward’s style). Beyond this, however, there are some distinctive attributes: the piece is very thinly potted and is extremely light. The glaze on the outside is matte, while the interior is a shiny dark brown. Richardson has created a bit of an illusion of depth with the wavy lip, as well as the darkening of the surface decoration at the edges of the pot to make us think it is rounder than it is. Seen from above, it is clear the pot is more flat than round. A really elegant piece by an excellent potter. Purchaser is responsible for any VAT that may occur due to import (this item is classified as an original work, and should incur a reduced rate).
