William’Bill’ Marshall stoneware bottle vase with tenmoku ground. The item is without chips, cracks or repairs and is in good condition. There are some’pin pricks’ in the glaze which can be seen because the Tenmoku glaze colour alters from black / brown to rust. It bears the impressed WM personal mark for Bill Marshall twice (as photographed). Looped handles on shoulders. The fact there is no Leach mark suggests it was made at Bill’s Lelant studio after he left Leach pottery when Bernard Leach passed away in 1978. Measuring 29cm in height, 16cm across its shoulders and 14cm wide it weighs 2410 grams. Thank you for looking at my items which will be updated regularly.

William’Bill’ Marshall stoneware studio vase. Wonderful colour on this vase made by Bill Marshall. Bill must be described as Bernard Leach’s right hand man. Taken on as a Leach pottery apprentice Bill worked there for 40 years. He is seen as the most accomplished thrower of a pot at the leach and became the foreman. He also threw many of the pots decorated by Bernard Leach particularly when Bernard was in later life and couldn’t manage to throw them. Of all the Leach potters Bill is my personal favourite. This one only has Bill’s personal mark. There are two’grazed’ of the glaze one on the rim of the top of the pot (as photograph 10) and the other in photograph 3.
