ORIGINAL JOSEPH MEYER NEWCOMB COLLEGE POTTERY CYNTHIA LITTLEJOHN SIGNED VASE! Gorgeous tiny, rare vase… Well signed on the base bottom with the NC mark for Newcomb College, and the JM mark for Joseph Meyer. It was felt at Newcomb that men were needed to work the clay, throw the pots, fire the kiln and handle to glazing even though the college was established to instruct young southern, and particularly New Orleans women, in the liberal arts. Any woman who studied at Newcomb was allowed to decorate and sell their wares, as long as they were deemed acceptable by the faculty for sale. Our example carries the signature initials of CL for Cynthia Pugh Littlejohn who was one of the original women designated as a craftsman. As a craftsman she was not expected to create her own pot, but rather to carve and decorate her piece. Most pieces created by the women depicted the flora of the area such as camelias, jonquils and lilies. The mark of a C in a circle further delineates this piece as buff clay with a semi-matte glaze and dates this piece to 1913-15. Additionally there is a registration number of GU089, and a shape number of 230. The finish or glaze is in fine condition. Base bottom carries marks clearly with some residual substance from our estate holders inventory tag… This should remove well with your expertise. No other issues are found except for expected age patina. Measures in at about 3 & 1/4″ tall and about 3″wide. Questions if you have them… We prefer our clients to have Public, rather than Private, feedback. Additional Packaging Requests : We have received a few requests to ” double box ” our items.
