Aki Moriuchi. Vase.’Geological’ glaze. C. 1980s. Signed. Perfect. With stand
Geological’ glaze (a term the artist uses in preference to the term’volcanic’, used by critics, but that she does not accept). The vase deliberately stands at an angle, which adds a non-conformist, bio-morphic dynamism. This piece has a strong presence, in spite of its modest size. The carved stand, included, enables one to modulate its display, and enhances it height to 14cm. One may regret that Aki Moriuchi stopped making ceramics after the last exhibition of her work was held in 2006. The form of this vase reveals a creative, sculptural approach to form and a sophistication that situate Moriuchi’s creativity as that of an artist. The form departs from Asian clichés reproduced by many potters. It is not surprising that this sculptural approach to ceramic forms led her to give up making pots; although one may question the decision; except if she felt she had done enough. It is interesting to note that Moriuchi never succumbed to the temptation of gigantism, but made intimate pieces; some of which invite to be handled and turned around in one’s hands; while achieving, at the same time, a certain monumentality.
