Vintage Pond Farm California Studio Pottery Bowl Vase Wildenhain Lustrous Glaze
Pond Farm Studio Pottery Vessel Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage Pond Farm studio art pottery bowl or vase. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This piece is approximately 3 inches tall, with a diameter of about 5 3/4 inches. Unpacked, it weighs 11.2 ounces. The interior has a lustrous brown glaze, and the exterior is shiny and blue, with some matte brownish areas. The exterior has decoration of horizontal bands. This would be a fine addition to a collection of studio ceramics. Identification This vintage pot is incised beneath, “Pond Farm, ” as shown. A number “20” is also written beneath in pencil, as found. Marguerite Wildenhain, an important potter, founded Pond Farm. She is listed on askART and on Vasefinder, and her works have been exhibited by many museums. Per the Vasefinder Museum and the Robert V. Starting in 1914, she studied sculpture at the School of Applied Arts in Berlin. In 1919, she commenced studies at the Bauhaus in Weimar, where she studied with Max Krehan and Gerhard Marcks. Wildenhain taught at the Municipal School for Arts and Crafts in Halle-Saale, where she was head of the ceramics program. She relocated to Putten, Holland during the 1930s, where she had a studio with her husband. She moved to the United States in 1940, settling in northern California. Wildenhain taught at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. She moved to Pond Farm in 1942, in Guerneville, California (north of San Francisco). Summer workshops commenced in 1949. At Pond Farm, she taught some of the greatest artists from around the world. Wildenhain exhibited at the Nationals during 1940, 1946, 1947, and 1950. Condition This piece looks good overall, with light wear and no chips or cracks. Minor asymmetry is as made. Variations in glazing are also as made.
