Shoji Hamada Japanese studio pottery large kaki glaze press moulded vase c. 1940
A large and quite dramatic press-moulded studio pottery vase by one of the great 20th Century Japanese potters, Hamada Shoji. Kaki glaze with splashed copper and seiji glaze decoration. Condition is generally good and essentially as it emerger from the kiln, but there is a non-penetrating fissure to the underside where some of the press-moulded construction has opened up during firing and some minor kiln grit to the upper side. Please see the photographs. Dimensions (approximate): 22cm x 19cm x 8cm. This is a relatively early example of Hamada’s iconic press-moulded kaki glazed vases featuring a thrown rather than a press-moulded neck. There is a very similar example (same decoration, thrown neck) in the Hamada Shoji memorial museum in Mashiko. An iconic 20th century pot, albeit with a couple of points against it.
