Wren / Oxshott Studio Pottery Bottle Vase, Unmarked, Pearlescent Glaze, 18cm
Wren / Oxshott Studio Pottery Bottle Vase. 18cm Tall – Pearlescent Glaze on Stoneware – Wren Family Collection. This striking stoneware bottle vase comes from the Wren family collection and has clear visual and stylistic similarities to known works produced at Oxshott Pottery. Though the base is unmarked, it was acquired directly as part of the same group of studio pieces attributed to the Wren family and is believed to be a genuine Oxshott example. The vase is hand-thrown with a textured, tapering neck and a wider base. It features a visually complex, layered glaze treatment with deep blues, earthy browns, and areas of pearlescent lustre -an effect sometimes seen in Oxshott glazes. Condition is very good overall, with no cracks or structural damage. Please see close-up photos for detail, including the base and glaze surface. This is a strong, sculptural studio piece that displays beautifully. The Oxshott Pottery was established in 1920 by Denise and Henry Wren and became a highly regarded family studio across several generations. Most notably, it featured two successive generations of pioneering women studio potters – Denise Wren, one of the earliest female ceramicists of the 20th century, and her daughter Rosemary Wren, who continued the legacy into the mid-century period. Their work is recognised for its blend of modernist influences with folk-art sensibility, and the studio played a key role in shaping the British studio pottery movement. Oxshott Pottery exhibited at the 1924-25 British Empire Exhibition, the Wren’s work features in a number of museum collections including the Victoria & Albert museum. Provenance: Wren family collection, from the Oxshott Pottery. Attribution: Believed to be Wren/Oxshott, though unmarked. Material: Stoneware with layered glaze and pearlescent effects. Diameter at base: Approx. Condition: Very good – no cracks; one area of glaze thinning/absence. Always happy to help – just send a message.
