Vintage 1970s Cornish Brutalist Wheel Thrown Studio Pottery Blue Green Hexagon Medallion Ceramic Vase. This striking, hand-crafted studio vase is a quintessential example of the post-war Cornish Brutalist pottery movement from the late 1960s to mid-1970s. While entirely unmarked, all physical characteristics point to this being an exceptionally rare, unsigned studio piece from the inner circle of Tremaen Pottery (Newlyn, Cornwall) or a closely affiliated mid-century Cornish contemporary like Eric Leaper. Early, large-scale, or experimental art pieces from these workshops were frequently left completely unsigned on their bases, originally relying solely on temporary paper labels. Authentic Artisan Craftsmanship & Features. Unlike mass-produced factory ceramics, the interior of this tube vase features distinct horizontal throwing rings from being manually pulled up on the potter’s wheel. It has a substantial, satisfyingly heavy, and solid weight. Measures 22.5cm x 8cm. Hand-Stamped Texturing, the midsection is adorned with prominent hand-impressed geometric hexagon “eye” medallions, framed by meticulous tool-stamped decorative borders around the neck and base. Classic Cornish Palette, the vase beautifully bridges raw texture and vivid color, using a dry, volcanic manganese-brown iron oxide background contrasted against hyper-glossy, melting pools of running cobalt blue and vibrant copper-green glazes. Raw Wire-Cut Base, the unglazed buff-colored base showcases distinct concentric wire-cut marks from being sliced off the wheel head, alongside hand-sponged rim wipes and a faint workshop underglaze pencil marking. Excellent vintage condition with no cracks, or restorations. There is one small glaze chip to the base edge. The glaze remains incredibly bright and the textures sharply defined. A magnificent, highly tactile collector’s piece that perfectly captures the rugged, sculptural energy of the mid-century Cornish coast.
