Vintage Harrison McIntosh Studio Art Pottery Vase Description and Item Information Up for sale is vintage studio pottery vase by the well-known artist, Harrison McIntosh. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This hand thrown vase has deeply incised, vertical sgraffito decoration, with contrasting light and dark glazing. It stands approximately 7 7/8 inches tall, and it has a maximum width of about 4 3/4 inches. Unpacked, this pot weighs 3 pounds 2.4 ounces. It would be a fine addition to a collection of American studio ceramics. Identification This vase was made by Harrison McIntosh (1914 – 2016), an American artist with listings on askART, Wikipedia, and more. The artist’s HM cipher mark is beneath, as shown in Photo 5. Per Wikipedia, McIntosh was born in Vallejo, California, and he grew up in Stockton, California. He studied at the University of Southern California, where he took classes with Glen Lukens during the early 1940s. Later, he attended Claremont Graduate School, which was directed by Millard Sheets. McIntosh studied ceramics under Richard Petterson at Scripps College. He also attended workshops with Shoji Hamada, with Bernard Leach at Mills College, and with Marguerite Wildenhain at Pond Farm. He became friends with fellow artists Jim Hueter, Karl Benjamin, and Sam Maloof. During this period, he and fellow ceramicist Rupert Deese opened a studio together, which they operated together for five decades. During the late 1950s, McIntosh taught at the Los Angeles Country Art Institute (now the Otis College of Art and Design). There, he befriended Peter Voulkos, Paul Soldner, John Mason, and Kenneth Price. He had over forty solo exhibitions throughout his six decade career. McIntosh was an important and influential American ceramicist. Condition This piece looks very good overall, with no cracks. To the sharp, lower edge adjacent to the foot, there is a tiny 1/16 inch by 3/32 inch flake, as shown in Photo 6. This pot has very light wear overall. Terms of Sale 1.
