Peter beard was born in Southport, Lancashire, in 1951. He started working part-time in potteries in 1965 making a variety of cast and press-moulded pieces which fired his interest in a career in ceramics. In 1973 he moved to Scotland to help set up a pottery making thrown domestic stoneware and developed an interest in one-off pots and sculptural pieces. He opened his first studio in Kent in 1975 making only one-off pieces, and moved to his present studio in 1980. He became an exhibiting member if the Craftsmen Potters Association in 1976 and was elected to the Council of the association in 1989. His current work is a mixture of thrown and hand-built pieces. He works in a range of sizes using oxidised stoneware fired to 1290 C, using combinations of shiny, matt and semi-matt glazes, built up in layers prior to firing, creating textural surfaces in a range of pastel shades and some stronger colours. Wax resist is used extensively to create patterns and to isolate the glaze layers during application. His work is exhibited throughout the United Kingdom and in the U.
