Clay Craft Studios pottery vase arts & crafts Rowena Hollowell Iowa State Yancy
Here is a rare pottery vase by Rowena Hollowell of Clay Craft Studios in Winchester Massachusetts. Formed by 4 women in 1931, Mary Yancy (Hodgen), Ann Norton, Rowena Hollowell and Carol Nickerson. Mary Yancy had previously worked at Iowa State College Ames, Hollowell and the others at the Paul Revere Pottery of the Saturday Evening Girls. After 1934 it was just Hollowell and Nickerson until closing in 1954. This vase is hand thrown and decorated with incised vertical lines and dots, under a glossy turquoise blue green glaze with clear on the inside showing the cream clay color. It measures 4 5/8 inches tall and 4 1/8 inches in diameter at the widest. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, repairs, or firing flaws. Marked on the bottom with the studio’s mark, an “S” with “C”s in the top and bottom, and RH for the maker. A nice piece by a lesser known but historically important New England pottery.
