Exquisite Robert Sperry (1927-1998) Mid-Century Studio Art Pottery Vase 8×5.5
We are delighted to offer this rare mid-century modern vase by Pacific Northwest listed ceramic artist, Robert Sperry. This piece represents Sperrys experimentation with color and abstract expressionism. It measures approximately 8 high x 5.5 diameter and is in good used condition. There appears to be a crease and a possible crack on the rim, though hard to tell how deep. It is signed on the base by Sperry. He received his MFA from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA in 1955. During his studies, Sperry had a short residence at the Archie Bray Foundation in Missoula, MT where he had contact with two other legendary ceramists, Peter Voulkos and Rudy Autio. One of America’s preeminent ceramists, Sperry was a restless creative force who helped shape the University of Washington’s ceramics program into one of the country’s most influential. Hailed as “one of the great contributors to ceramic art as we know it today, ” Sperry pushed clay to its boundaries as a medium (Armstrong, in Bright Abyss, 7). Fascinated with chemistry from an early age, he always considered himself an experimentalist. He brought an inquiring, scientific mind to his work as an artist, but what he loved most about ceramics was the element of chance. First perfecting his craft as a potter and glaze technician, Sperry expanded the decorative possibilities for functional ware, then explored the realms of sculpture, abstract expressionism, and large-scale public-art murals. He was also a painter, printmaker, and filmmaker who helped launch the UW’s film program and co-founded Northwest Designer Craftsmen. Works by Sperry appear in numerous collections, including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and the Renwick Gallery, both in Washington, D. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Seattle Art Museum; and Seoul Metropolitan Museum of Art in Korea. We appreciate your careful review of the photos as they tell so much more than we can articulate; and ask that you zoom in for a closer look at any and all condition issues. As always, we thank you for taking a moment to consider this piece.
