Please check images as they form a large part of the description. Massier’s metallic luster glazes produce the dual properties of reflectivity and transparency to create iridescence. In order to achieve this, Massier fired his ceramics in a three-tiered process at increasingly lower temperatures. He applied the final glaze created from a metallic clay compound with a brush. When the blackened vessels had fully cooled, they were buffed until shiny to reveal his iridescent inspirations of nature. Each piece produced was a unique object revealing not only the hand of the artist but also the variable effects of temperature, natural elements and their interactive relationships. Among the many international awards earned, it was Massier’s ceramic glazing techniques using turquoise metallic luster which captured the world’s attention. Massier’s glazes are are illusory interpretations fused into fired earthenware. Conversely, the ceramic object’s solidity belies its ephemeral nature which constantly changes in light. This duality naturally inherent to this medium is a theme which Massier echoes in his subject matter. Acidic colors, so characteristic of Massier’s later lusterware, blend into an abstraction suggestive of the essential elements of fire, water, air and earth. The Massiers began collaborating with Lévy-Dhurmer, whom Clément appointed studio artistic director that year. Lévy-Dhurmer was a collector of Hispano-Moresque ceramics decorated with iridescent glazes derived from metals such as copper, gold, and silver. The influence of the Spanish earthenware, with its bright, reflective metallic glazes is seen in his pieces for the Massiers. The Massiers and Lévy-Dhurmer worked together on innovative shapes, the rediscovery of luster glazes, and the use of luster glazes with etching to bring about fantastically complex effects. Lévy-Dhurmer’s decorations were influenced by the prevailing fervor for Japanese, Islamic, and other Near Eastern ceramics but, a Symbolist at heart, he often rejected realism in favour of mysticism and spirituality. His unique contribution was his ability to produce shapes and patterns that seem to shimmer with life, while suggesting deeper meanings. Lévy-Dhurmer also painted and many works are exhibited in museums and important private collections. Paris : Musée du Petit Palais. Paris : Musée du Quai Branly.
