Vintage Katherine Choy Art Pottery Vase Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage Katherine Choy art pottery vase. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This hand thrown pot has abstract, glazed decoration in light and dark brown. It has a white porcelain clay body. It stands about 3 1/2 inches tall, and it has a maximum width of about 5 inches. Unpacked, this piece weighs 1 pound 1.9 ounces. This would be a fine and rare example to add to a collection of American studio ceramics. She is listed in the Vasefinder Museum. Per Vasefinder, Choy was originally from Hong Kong. She was a student of Tony Prieto at Mills College in Oakland, California, where she received B. Choy completed post-graduate studies at Cranbrook Academy in Michigan, where she was a student of Maija Grotell. She became head of the ceramics department at Tulane University’s Newcomb College. Choy co-founded the Clay Art Center of Port Chester, New York with Henry Okamoto. She exhibited at 6000 Years Art in Clay at the Los Angeles County Fair in 1952, and also at the Nationals from 1949 to 1956. Per the Smithsonian Design Museum, Choy passed away from pneumonia at the age of 29. Condition This pot looks great overall, with no chips or cracks. It has very light wear. A small bit of extra clay to the side is as made (see Photo 2). Variations in glazing are as made. Terms of Sale 1.
