LAURENCE McGOWAN STUDIO POTTERY SMALL GROUP VASE, PRESERVE POT & JUG
A charming small group of three Laurence McGowan studio pottery pieces all in excellent condition. All have very nice, crisp decoration and are accompanied by the potter’s card. I believe Laurence stopped potting in about 2017 after a distinguished career as one of the foremost studio potters of our time. The vase is approx. 16.5cm in height. The lidded preserve pot is approx. 12.5cm in height including the lid. The jug is approx. 10.5cm in height. A little under 12cm in height and approx 17cm in max length. From the DeMorgan Foundation web page. Laurence McGowan was born in Salisbury in 1942. After an earlier career in land surveying in various parts of the world, he resolved to follow an interest kindled during his school years and become a potter. Receiving workshop training, first with Pru Greene at. And then with Alan Caiger-Smith at. Trained in the traditional majolica or in-glaze technique of pottery decoration, McGowan now applies this knowledge to enhance his thrown stoneware pots with ever-changing brushwork patterns distilled from plant and animal forms. Whilst in no way imitative, these often contain echoes of his interest in the Islamic decorative arts and their assimilation into the contemporary vocabulary through the Arts and Craft Movement. Some pots are inscribed, exploring the extra dimension that calligraphy can give a piece. Commissioned commemorative and presentation pieces form a large part of his output. These have embraced everything from a plate to mark the 21st anniversary of the Antiques Roadshow, another for the city of Royston to mark the Millennium, Royal visits and the Yorkshire County Cricket Club Player of the Year trophy. McGowans work is represented in many collections, and is used and enjoyed in many homes throughout the world. Public collections include those of the. Hampshire County Museums and Libraries Service. Nature in Art Museum. He is a fellow of the Craft Potters Association and a visiting tutor at the visual Islamic and traditional arts department of the Prince’s Foundation, London. He is also one of the featured craftsmen in the’handmade’ series of films for schools commissioned by Channel 4. Faster or other options available.
