Malcolm Pepper studio pottery rare faceted stoneware vase in the Chinese manner
A fairly rare faceted studio pottery vase in the early Chinese manner by leading British potter Malcolm Pepper. Stoneware (I believe, rather than porcelain). Thrown and faceted form with applied lugs. Brushed red copper floral decoration over a crackled cream semi-matt glaze. Excellent condition, as new. Unmarked, as is the case with a fair amount of Pepper’s work (apparently he took to marking his pots at the end of his career after a curator complained that they were being mistaken for antique Chinese examples, which, while a problem, also seems like a fairly high compliment). Dimensions (approximate): 18cm x 15cm x 15cm. A lovely quality vase and a very good example of Pepper’s work. Malcolm Pepper was a very highly regarded potter of the post-war period, primarily producing works heavily inspired by Song Dynasty Chinese ceramics. Tragically, he suffered an early death in the 1980s, cutting off a flourishing and highly-regarded career just as he was receiving significant gallery attention.
