British Studio Pottery Vase Lucie Rie Manner Modernist Signed R 21cm Vintage. A superb and intriguing vintage British studio pottery vase of exceptional Modernist form, dating approximately to the mid/late 20th century. Beautifully wheel-thrown with a rounded baluster body rising into a long, elegant waisted neck and an exceptionally wide flared trumpet rim. The exterior is covered in a wonderfully subtle ivory / oatmeal glaze with a softly textured, almost speckled finish, contrasting beautifully with the deep dark brown-black glaze to the interior of the flared rim. The underside has a neatly turned foot and bears an impressed potter’s seal, which appears to be a stylised letter “R” with an extended decorative flourish. Despite considerable research, I have unfortunately been unable to positively identify the potter. The quality of throwing, restrained glaze palette, thin flared rim and elegant Modernist proportions are strongly reminiscent of the post-war British studio pottery tradition and particularly the work and aesthetic associated with Dame Lucie Rie. Please note: this vase is NOT being attributed to Lucie Rie. The reference is purely stylistic and for descriptive purposes. Interestingly, authenticated Lucie Rie vases are well documented with closely related elongated forms and dramatically flaring lips, although her pieces bear her own distinctive impressed artist’s seal. A beautifully executed and very decorative piece of British Modernist studio pottery which displays wonderfully. The vase is in excellent condition as shown, all wonderful. If any studio pottery collectors recognise the distinctive impressed R potter’s seal, I would be extremely grateful to hear from you.
