Substantial Sicilian Studio Art Pottery Vase NICOLA MIRENDA 2021 Makers Mark

Substantial Sicilian Studio Art Pottery Vase made by NICOLA MIRENDA. He is a young 40-year-old ceramist from Santo Stefano di Camastra. Born on October 24, 1972 in Sant’Agata di Militello, he grew up along the small, colorful streets of his town. At the age of just 10, he began going to a local factory to observe the clay being made, and from there his passion for ceramics began. He attended art school, then trained in local workshops, and in 2003 he opened his first small workshop: “L’ATELIER NJCO”. He met Iwona, a young woman of Polish origin, whom he later married and became a skilled ceramist herself. From 2004 to 2006, he participated in a two-year project, “Terra Terra, ” with workshops organized in the square to promote local crafts. In 2008, together with other ceramists such as Filippo Fratantoni, Filadelfio Todaro, and Salvatore Ciardo, he founded the cultural association called Amici della Ceramica. Among the various activities promoted by this association, cultural exchanges with other countries boasting a ceramics tradition have been important. In 2010, “ART VILLAGE KERAMOS” was inaugurated, which, in addition to being a ceramics workshop, was a place where adults and children could interact with farm animals. On April 2, 2016, the same association began managing the MUDIS St. Stefano Diffused Museum museum in Santo Stefano di Camastra, located in Palazzo Trabia, where works from the ancient and contemporary St. Stefano tradition are exhibited. In 2018, with other members including Luca Ruggeri, Valentina Fratantoni, and Iwona Zdeb, he founded “Triskele, ” another association with the aim of promoting ceramic craftsmanship by running workshops for adults and children. These workshops also offer training courses for anyone wishing to learn and gain experience in the world of ceramics. Artisan Nicola Mirenda has participated in several group exhibitions; most notably, his solo exhibition in 2019 at “Le Saline” in Marsala. He also collaborates with many international artists, including Tindaro Gagliano and Denis Savarì. Its innovative and refined production is characterized by the use of a wood-fired oven as was done a hundred years ago. In Santo Stefano di Camastra, both the entire structure, made of unfired bricks of varying thicknesses, and the actual cooking chamber are called Furnu. As in the rest of the island, these are almost always vertical kilns, with a cylindrical cooking chamber and an ascending flame, equipped with a temporary hood made, according to a well-known archaic technique, from shards of pottery placed on top of the cooking goods.
