Naoki Yokoyama Bizen Japanese studio pottery stonware chawan tea bowl, boxed
A very nice studio pottery ceremonial chawan teabowl by Yokoyama Naoki one of the highly regarded fresh new generation of Bizen potters working in Japan. Stoneware, unglazed and subjected to a lengthy wood firing. Very good colour and variation of surface, with four fairly distinct “faces” showcasing different effects. Excellent condition, as new. With wrapping cloth and original signed wooden storage box. Incised potter’s mark to the underside. Dimensions (approximate): 12.5cm x 10.5cm x 8.5cm. Yokoyama Naoki is a very interesting potter, one of a new generation of Bizen potters who are keeping the old Bizen traditions alive while experimenting with form and technique. He acquires his clay from the rice fields and subjects it to minimal processing, producing works with interesting swirling clay textures, as on display in this piece. A large vase of his was prominently on display in the exhibitions drawn from the Gordon Brodfuherer collection.
