A very fine Japanese chawan tea bowl by leading French ceramicist Claude Champy. Multiple high-iron and high-silica glazes over incised decoration. Excellent condition, as new. Incised potter’s signature to the foot. Dimensions (approximate): 13cm x 13.5cm x 7.5cm. Claude Champy is one of France’s leading potters and also one of relatively few Western potters whose wares for the tea ceremony are taken seriously and actively collected in Japan itself. His works are among those covered in the tea bowl episode of the landmark Kato Shuichi television documentary “Japan: Spirit and Form”.
